EQUIPMENT RECOVERY SYSTEMS

The following is a short summation of the use of technology / recovery systems currently used on construction equipment and a sample survey was conducted to determine the percentage of equipment that has been outfitted with these systems:

1. Johnson Equipment (Riverside County and San Bernardino County Caterpillar dealer), Hawthorne Equipment (San Diego County Caterpillar dealer), Coastline Equipment (Los Angeles County John Deere dealer) and Cook Equipment Company (JCB and Bobcat dealer) stated that less than 5% of the equipment they sold had a GPS and/or a LoJack recovery system installed. All are members of CPP.

2. Two major construction companies (Steve P. Rados, Inc. and Sukut Construction, Inc.) do not install either type of system due to the cost of their equipment and monitoring fees. Sukut is currently testing different GPS systems, but it is only for fleet maintenance. Both companies are CPP Members.

3. LoJack’s (one of the best systems available) recovery rate is only 60 to 80 percent depending on the geographical area of the country.

a. The owner has to know the equipment has been stolen and report the equipment stolen to police before the LoJack is activated.

b. Occasionally, the police report is flawed because of inaccurate information given to the police, this causes a delayed activation or no activation at all.

c. LoJack’s new GPS system will be for fleet maintenance only.

d. LoJack is a member of CPP

4. Most companies are concerned with the monthly cost of GPS monitoring, which averages around $30 per month per piece.

5. Electronics reliability is a major factor in recovery systems as construction equipment receives tough and sometimes abusive use. Outside mounted antenna components required on most GPS systems gives away the presence of the system and are usually defeated by smart thieves.
